About

author barbara mcmahon on the beachBarbara grew up in northern Virginia, moving to California to attend the University of California at Berkeley. Upon graduation, she remained in California, making the San Francisco Bay Area her home base while she worked as a flight attendant for an international airline.

When her flying days ended, she began to work in the computer industry, rising to a vice presidency in a software development firm. In her “spare time,” she decided to give in to a long cherished desire to try her hand at writing.

One of the first things she discovered was that writing was one thing, but getting a book published was much more difficult. Persevering until she made that first sale, she then sold another, and then another. To date she has published more than seven dozen novels and one novella.

After that first sale, a new dream arose – to write for a living and leave the hectic pace of the San Francisco Bay Area behind.

A few years later, she did just that – quitting her “day job” to move to the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. In 2020 she and her husband moved to Michigan to get away from the constant wild fire threat.  Now she enjoys the seasons, walking in the woods behind her home with her dogs, and sightseeing around Michigan.

At last count, more seventeen and a half million copies of her books have sold in fifty different countries in twenty one different languages. For books with international settings, she refers to her flight attendant’s journal for descriptions and memories. But the American West is her favorite locale. She has written numerous books with cowboys as heroes, and plans even more to come.

Dedicated to a strict work regimen to meet deadlines, she still finds time to pursue her hobby of working on her family history and is still involved with her California chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is a member of On Fire Fiction writers; Novelists, Inc.; and the NSDAR – which has nothing to do with writing, but does tie in with her love for genealogy!
